How do you know what is diversity if you never lived under the same roof with people from all over the world?

How do you know what is tolerance, if you never had to get used to something different even if you didn't like it? How do you know what's autonomy, if you never had the chance to decide something by yourself? How do you know what it means to grow up, if you never stopped being a child to start a new course? How do you know what is to be helpless, if you never wanted to hug someone and had a computer screen to prevent you from doing it? How do you know what is distance, if you never, looking at a map, said "I am so far away"?

How do you know what is a language, if you never had to learn one to make friends? How do you know what is patriotism if you never shouted "I love my country" holding a flag in your hands? How do you know what is true reality, if you never had the chance to see a lot of them to make one? How do you know what is an opportunity, if you never caught one? How do you know what is pride, if you never experienced it for yourself at realising how much you have accomplished?

How do you know what is to seize the day, if you never saw the time running so fast? How do you know what is a friend, if the circumstances never showed you the true ones? How do you know what is a family, if you never had one that supported you unconditionally? How do you know what are borders, if you never crossed yours, to see what there was on the other side? How do you know what is imagination, if you never thought about the moment when you would go back home?

How do you know the world, if you have never been an exchange student?"

Semester Final Concert & Goodbye Louisa

 Last Wednesday we had our last concert for this semester at school. First Jazz Band, then Symphonic Band and last Wind Ensemble, which I play in. At the very end we played a Christmas song all together, with marching band too. It was really fun, as always, I had really good time with my friends. Here are some pictures from that amazing night :)

At the same time it was sad because of friend, Louisa, a really good friend. She's an exchange student from Germany and she'll leave on Monday since she did just the first semester. I hope you'll read this.

What I wanna tell you is thank you, you're an amazing friend, I'm so glad I met you and this month with you have been the best ever. You've always been there for me and living and going through the same things as me you've always understood me as nobody else. Thank you, I hope to see you in Europe when I'll be back too. Safe journey, I'll miss you so much ❤︎

Finals Week - Comparison Between American & Italian Scholastic System

Today I'm gonna talk about these five days of finals exams, with some inconvenient for the snow. First I'm just gonna say how it works here and how it works in my country, some differences I hadn't talked about in the scholastic system post, and then I'll talk about my finals week :)

So in the United States the high school is divided in two semesters, in general August-Decemeber and January- May. Since to graduate you need credits from different classes at the end of the semester you have exams, which consist of 20% of your grade, and if you pass the class you get half-credit. Why can't they just give one credit at the end of the year? I'll just make up an example: let's say that for english you need 4.5 credits, then the last year you take english just for the first semester. In the US to pass a class you have at least to have a D-, which is 59.5%. Also here if you fail a class you just have to take finals for that class the following year, but you don't fail the grade. Once you reach the number of credits you need you just partecipate to the ceremony and do the famous Walk on the stage, which I'm gonna do to!!!  I'm gonna say something about how it works in my country for curiosity :) 

In Italy we pass the class if we have more then 60% in every class and based on our mean we get a certain number of credits (max of 8 in XI-XII grade and 9 in XII grade) for a maximum total of 25, which it's 1/4 of our grade for the graduation exams of the last year. Then we have an oral where we bring all the classes, which is 30 points, then the written tests it 45 points (15 for the Italian one, 15 for the thematic one, based on what kind of high school you are in (Greek or Latin for me since mine is an humanistic HS), and 15 for the 'third test' which can be of different types and it's about 4-5 of your senior year classes). And if that is below 60 you have failed and you have to do the senior year again. We have generally 5 years, the credits start from the third year, we don't have name like freshman, sophomore, junior and senior, we just say I,II,III,IV,V year of high school, I use them sometimes because it's easier when I write in english. If you fail a class you have to take classes in summer and take an exam in September, however, if you fail more than 3 classes, you fail the year and you have to do it again, same thing if fail the September exam. To be admitted to the final you are required to have at least 60% in every class, and not just as mean. That's it, sorry It was long hahaha

When I go back to Italy I'll have to take exams in the classes I don't take here (Greek, Latin, Italian, Philosophy, History of Art) to have a grade for the mean based on which I'll be given credits for my graduation exams. The year abroad, by law, it's recognised in Italy so I can't fail the year as long as I pass here, the exams are just for the credits, I'll talk about it when I go back and my school will tell me more precisely what they want me to do.

Now, let's talk about this finals week. On Monday I had Math and World History, which went both good. On Tuesday, which is today, it snowed so school has been closed, the wind reached 40 mph that created this beautiful thing in the back yard. We have to go on Friday too, we were supposed to finish on Thursday. Wednesday PE and Band (Tomorrow night concert!!!), which are gonna be just normal classes actually hahaha, we'll have finals for PE a week earlier since it's a big class and we needed time. Thursday Spanish and English, both easy probably, and then Friday, the most scary one, AP Biology. I hope it's gonna be easy haha I'll let you guys know, wish me good luck! ;)

Oggi parlerò di questa settimana di esami di fine semestre, con l'inconveniente neve di oggi. Parlerò semplicemente di come funziona qui in relazione all'Italia e poi dei miei esami. Nel post in inglese ho speso diverse righe spiegando gli esami di stato e particolari del sistema scolastico italiano di cui non parlerò qui assumendo che in quanto italiani li sappiate ;)

Negli Stati Uniti l'anno alle superiore si divide in due semestri, in generale agosto-dicembre e gennaio-maggio. Per diplomarsi servono un tot di crediti da specifiche classi e alla fine di ogni semestre ci sono esami, che consistono nel 20% del tuo voto, se passi il tutto è mezzo credito. Perché non darne solo uno intero a fine anno? Invento, diciamo che per inglese per diplomarti hai bisogno di 4.5 crediti, all'ultimo anno farai inglese solo un semestre. Qui si passa con la D-, cioè dal 59.5%, e se non passi una classe devi solo rifare gli esami finali l'anno seguente, senza essere bocciato. Quando raggiungi il numero richiesto di crediti devi solo partecipare alla cerimonia con la famosa 'camminata' e lancio di cappello, che io farò!!! Nel post in inglese ho poi parlato dell'Italia, di come noi veniamo rimandati a settembre, dei crediti assegnati a fine anno nel triennio e di com'è strutturato l'esame di maturità. Risparmio a voi tutta la spiegazione in quanto non vi serve, e a me risparmio la fatica di tradurre hahah Torniamo ora al post...

Quando tornerò in Italia dovrò fare esami per le materie che non ho avuto qui, come greco, latino, filo, storia dell'arte, italiano, perchè devono avere un voto per ogni materia per assegnarmi i crediti. L'anno all'estero da diversi anni a questa parte è per legge riconosciuto come valido in Italia, quindi se vengo promosso qui sono senza dubbio in quinta quando torno. Parlerò meglio di esami etc quando tornerò e la mia scuola italiana mi dirà di preciso cosa vogliono che faccia.  

Infine, la mia settimana di esami. Ieri ho avuto Matematica e Storia e sono andati entrambi molto bene, sono passato. Oggi avrei dovuto avere educazione fisica e banda, anche se avremmo fatto solo normale lezione, ma è nevicata e la scuola è stata chiusa, c'era un vento a 40 km/h che ha creato questa cosa stupenda nel retro, guardate la fotografia! Rovescio della medaglia dobbiamo andare a scuola venerdì, la scuola doveva finire giovedì. Domani avrò educazione fisica e banda (domani sera concerto!!!). Giovedì spagnolo e inglese e venerdì biologia avanzata, che è il più difficile e si vedrà, speriamo sia una prova facile. Vi farò sapere, auguratemi buona fortuna! ;)

"Shoot All The Bluejays You Want, If You Can Hit 'Em, But Remember It's A Sin To Kill A Mockingbird"

Hey there! Today I wanna talk about the book 'To Kill A Mockingbird' since we read it in my english class this semester and in these days I've been doing a project about it that I'll present next week.

This is an awesome book that you should read if you haven't already. I read in middle school my first time, in tenth grade the second time and this semester the third time, but first in english. In Italian the title is different, and it's Il Buio Oltre La Siepe, which means The Dark Over The Hedge, referring to the Radley's place and the mystery about Arthur. I prefer the original one since it's more related to the main theme and it's definitely a good metaphor for the injustice of the period when this happened because, for those of you that don't know that, this is a true story. What we have to do for the project is to choose a character and think about what shoe he/she likely wore and why, draw in and add some information about him/her like age and family information. It was related to something Atticus said about considering thing from another person's view to understand them and not to judge them.  I think this quote from Atticus, and the book in general, is really amazing and it made me think a lot, so if you have some time, think about it. This experience is helping me a lot become more mature, change my point of view, it's teaching me not to have prejudice, not to make stereotypes, understand why people do what they do. So maybe this book may be a good Christmas Present that I'm sure will be appreciated ;)

Italian Translation

Ciao! Oggi parlerò del libro Il buio oltre la siepe visto che l'ho letto nella mia classe di inglese questo semestre e in questi giorni ho fatto un progetto che presenterò settimana prossima. Questo libro è davvero fantastico e dovreste leggerlo se non l'avete già letto. Io l'ho letto alle medie, alle superiori e ora qui in inglese. In inglese il titolo è To Kill A Mockingbird che significa Uccidere Un Usignolo e si riferisce a una frase che Atticus dice, cioè che è peccato uccidere gli usignoli perchè non mangiano le sementi e non fanno niente di male, ed è una metafora per il periodo di discriminazione e ingiustizie contro le persone di colore. Il titolo italiano si riferisce alla casa dei Radley e al mistero riguardo Arthur. Questa è una storia vera in caso non lo sapeste. Il progetto che ho fatto era di scegliere un personaggio e pensare a che scarpe avrebbe indossato, disegnare una scarpa e scrivere alcune informazione sulla persona. Fa riferimento a una frase che Atticus dice riguardo a considerare le cose dal punto di vista del prossimo e non di giudicarlo. 

Penso che questa citazione e il libro in generale siano davvero straordinari e mi fa sempre pensare molto. Questa esperienza mi sta aiutando a maturare, a cambiare il mio punto di vista, mi sta insegnando ad andare oltre pregiudizi e stereotipi e capire perchè le persone fanno quello che fanno. Magari questo libro potrebbe essere un bel regalo di Natale che di sicuro sarà apprezzato ;)

City Rock - Climbing & Class Ring

Hey guys, I know I've been posting a lot lately haha, I have just a lot to talk about since I haven't written for a while. As I guess you know I am a climber, I love climbing. Since I've been here I've never climbed but I've recently found about a climbing gym close to the church where we go so I went last Tuesday and it was amazing, I actually got really tired since I hadn't climbed forever but it was really good. Hopefully I'll go again sometimes, here are some pictures by the way. The first picture is me on a slack-line, which is an important exercise for climbers to improve the balance. I think it's also a good metaphor for the life tho. In our life we have to find the equilibrium in what we do, we have to do right importance to thing and be able to take appropriate decisions, so choose wisely ;) The other picture is my class ring, the two sides, that arrived yesterday but it was the wrong size so I gave it back to have it fixed, It'll probably arrive before Christmas. It says my name, the italian flag, my graduation year which is 2016 if it works out and then there is the school name and symbol, which is the Scorpion. The letters SC stay for Sand Creek, my school. I think it's cool, I really love it and it's gonna be an awesome memory for this experience. Well I guess that's it, I hope to be able to write soon :)

Ciao ragazzi, so che ho postato diversi post recentemente haha, ho avuto molto da raccontare. Credo sappiate che sono un amante dell'arrampicata e che da quando sono arrivato qui non ho avuto l'occasione di arrampicare. Di recente ho trovato una palestra vicina alla chiesa dove andiamo e quindi lo scorso martedì ci sono andato ed è davvero bello, mi era mancato moltissimo. Mi sono distrutto in pratica non avendo arrampicato per un po ma spero di tornarci presto. La prima fotografia sono io su una slackline, un esercizio molto importante per l'arrampicata in quanto migliora l'equilibrio. Penso che sia anche una bella metafora per la vita. Nella nostra vita dobbiamo trovare il giusto equilibrio in ciò che facciamo, dare la giusta importanza alle cose ed essere in grado di prendere decisioni appropriate, perciò scegliete con saggezza ;)  L'altra foto è il mio anello di classe, i due lati, che è arrivato ieri ma ho dovuto darlo indietro perchè la taglia era sbagliata, spero che sia pronto prima di Natale. Sopra c'è il mio nome, la bandiera italiana, l'anno della mia maturità qui negli Stati Uniti, il nome della scuola e il simbolo, che è lo scorpione. Le lettere SC stanno per Sand Creek che è la mia scuola. Penso che sia davvero bello, mi piace un sacco e sarà un ricordo prezioso di quest'esperienza. é tutto, a presto spero :)

When You Have The Best Parents Ever ❤︎

Yesterday we were about to eat when somebody ringed the bell. I didn't really think about it, people often come, friends, coworkers or whatever. It was a delivery tho and Katherine, my host sister, came inside with a box in her hands, it was from Italy! My parents sent me some stuff for Christmas, a little tree, a calendar, some Juventus gear and food :) Just wanna say thank you again, you're the best!

Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving!!! Of course this is what I'm gonna talk about in this post, then I'll tell something real quick about the preparation for Christmas, which is gonna be in 21 days!!!

First of all for whoever didn't know it, Thanksgiving is a festivity celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November originally to give thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Today represent a day to be thankful for what we have, and most important is 'A day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens' (Abraham Lincoln), meaning be thankful to God. It was a really amazing day when I really felt part of this culture, this world, this reality. Since my host family is hispanic and catholic I think it's also been more important since more related to religion. The food was awesome, I gained more weight than I had already. We had a party here in our house with friends and family, we prepared all the food and decorations and for dinner we celebrated it. As tradition on Thanksgiving day people eat a turkey, which was delicious! Thanksgiving is also the day that starts the holiday season which leads to Christmas, which is in 21 days!!! Here are also some pictures about the Christmas decorations.

I'll take the occasion of Thanksgiving to say thank you, in the first place to my parents who did so much for me, who are the best parents ever and I'm really proud of them, and I hope they'll be of me too one day, and thanks again for this wonderful experience. I want to thank also my host family, such nice people who welcomed me in their house, treated me like a son and be really good and open with me, thank you for all this! :)

Ringraziamento! Questo è ovviamente ciò di cui vi parlerò e poi dirò qualcosa di veloce sulle decorazioni di Natale che è fra 21 giorni!!! Prima di tutto per chi non lo sapesse il Ringraziamento è una festività americana che si celebra il quarto giovedì di novembre per ringraziare in origine il raccolto e l'anno passato. Oggi rappresenta più un giorno per ringraziare quello che abbiamo e soprattuto 'Un giorno di ringraziamento e preghiera al nostro padre onnipotente che abita nei cieli' (Abraham Lincoln), cioè Dio. é stato davvero bello festeggiare questo giorno, sentirsi parte di questa cultura, questo mondo, questa realtà. Visto che la mia famiglia ospitante è ispanica e cattolica penso che sia stato anche più intenso in quanto maggiormente legato alla religione. Il cibo era fantastico, sono ingrassato parecchio hahaha. Per tradizione si mangia il tacchino che era davvero delizioso! ll Ringraziamento da anche inizio al periodo delle festività che porta al Natale, che è fra 21 giorni!!! Prendo l'occasione della festa del Ringraziamento per dire grazie prima di tutto ai miei genitori che hanno fatto così tanto per me, che sono i migliori genitori di sempre e di cui sono veramente fiero, e spero che loro lo saranno di me un giorno, e grazie ancora per questa fantastica esperienza. Voglio anche dire grazie alla mia famiglia ospitante, persone davvero gentili e carine che mi hanno accolto così calorosamente nella loro casa, trattato davvero bene e considerato come un figlio, grazie davvero! :)

No Matter Where You Are, Whether It's A Quarter Mile Away Or Half Way Across The World, The Most Important Thing In Life Will Always Be The Family

Home. You're not gonna find a place, anywhere in this planet or in anyone else, where you'll feel like at home. It's true. Don't get this wrong, here is awesome, I'm doing great... but yes, I miss home, how couldn't I? I just wanna say thank you again to all those who support me about this experience and most of all to my parents; and to all those who didn't believed in me, here I am, I made it. My dream is true, and sometimes I just stop and think about it and I can't believe it. Time's going really fast, in just 190 days I'll be back to my life, to reality and I'll be happy to, but it's not time yet, my place is here now. Never forget what's important and don't let anybody take it away from you. I'm not a person who believes in destiny because I don't want to think not to be able to do what I want, it's my life and it's gonna be as I say it will. Realise your dreams guys because we only live once, but never forget about your family and the people you care about because that's where your home is and will always be.

Hands Off From Europe - Pray For Paris

This is not an actual post about my experience or whatever and it's not gonna be long, I'm not even gonna translate it. Due to today's events I just feel like I need to write something, and so that's what I'm doing.

If for I don't know what reason you didn't hear about it today in France, precisely in Paris, there have been multiple terrorist attacks, a mass execution at a rock concert, hostage situations and another attack near a soccer stadium where President Francois Hollande was watching a match between France and Germany. In the Bataclan Theatre four gunmen wearing suicide vests started shooting and shouting 'This is for Syria. Allahu Akbar'. Other shooting and terrorist acts were reported in several places like bars and shopping centres. Right now it has been confirmed the death of 128 people and 5 terrorists have been killed. Isis claimed the responsibility of the act of war that it's considerated the worst violence witnessed in France since World War II. Holland made two decisions: first he declared the state of emergency, which means certain places will be closed, traffic may be banned and searches may also take place throughout the Paris region; and second he closed the borders not to let anybody come in to commit any act and not to let those who did the attack leaving the country and then catch them. 

The Eiffel Tower turned off its lights in memoriam of the victims who  lost their lives. I feel really close to what happened even though I'm halfway around the world. There are rumours that Rome will be next and then London. Italy has enforced the controls at the borders and it's in a state of alert. Things like this should never happen. I just wanna ask everybody to say a pray for Paris and for everybody who lost somebody because of this attack, to be close to them and to really take a minute to think about it. This is not the place, the world, where I wanna raise my kids, these aren't the values and the fears I want them to grow up with, so let's fight for our freedom, for our culture. Leaving is not the solution, but to stay and fight for what is ours.

News - Soccer MVP, Snow & Soup Kitchen

Hey guys, today I'm gonna talk about different things, it's pretty much an update about what has happened lately. I'll talk about the volunteering activity I did with my organisation, about the banquet for soccer and some other stuff. 

Last Saturday I went to the soup kitchen for the CCI Greenheart, my parter association here in the United States. It's a catholic place where volunteers make food for homeless people and everybody who is in need. It was an awesome experience, I really enjoyed. There were really nice people, ready to help and to be there for everyone. It taught me a lot and I'll definitely go also next time, which should be next month. 

The other main thing I wanted to tell you about is that we did the soccer banquet. It's a sort of dinner where everybody bring something, we eat all together to close the season, we say thanks to the coaches and rewards are given to the players. I was recognised as MVP, which stays for most valuable player, of my team. I really enjoyed this season even though I wasn't supposed to play.

Yesterday It snowed for the first time!!! It didn't last long, the snow melted quickly, but the temperature is always lower, this morning it was -3°C so it's probably gonna snow soon. Besides this everything else is okay, school, family. Last week I got my senior hoodie, unfortunately my ring is not ready yet but I hope it'll be soon. That's it, next week is thanksgiving and I'll probably write something about it. Bye :)

Italian Translation

Ehi ragazzi, oggi parlerò di diverse cose, è in pratica un aggiornamento su cos'e accaduto recentemente: un'attività di volontariato, il banchetto per calcio e altre cose.

Sabato scorso sono stato in questa cucina di volontariato con la CCI Greenheart, la mia associazione partner qui negli Stati Uniti. é un posto legato a una chiesa cattolica dove volontari preparano cibo per i senzatetto e per chiunque ne abbia bisogno. è stata un'esperienza fantastica, mi è davvero piaciuta. C'erano persone veramente disponibili, pronte ad aiutare chiunque. Mi ha insegnato molto e andrò di sicuro anche la prossima volta, che dovrebbe essere il mese prossimo. 

L'altra cosa di cui vi volevo parlare è il banchetto per calcio che abbiamo fatto, è una sorta di cena dove tutti portano qualcosa, mangiamo tutti insieme per chiudere la stagione, ringraziamo gli allenatori e vengono consegnate le riconoscenze ai giocatori. Io sono stato premiato come MVP della mia squadra, che sarebbe il giocatore che si ritiene sia stato il più bravo nella stagione.

Ieri ha nevicato per la prima volta!!! Non è durata molto perchè la neve si è sciolta in fretta, ma la temperatura è sempre più bassa, questa mattina era -3°C e presto nevicherà ancora. A parte tutto questo il resto va bene, la scuola, la famiglia. Settimana scorsa mi è arrivata la felpa da senior e sfortunatamente l'anello non è ancora arrivato ma spero che arrivi presto. Questo è tutto, settimana prossima ci sarà il Ringraziamento e probabilmente ne parlerò in un post. Ciao a tutti! :)

United States & Italy - Curiosities

This post is going to be about the differences that there are between Italy and United States, of course there are a thousand of them, I just wanna point out the most important ones, the ones that surprised me. Before starting here is a preliminary remark: these curiosities I'm gonna talk about are compared to my life, the place where I live and my experience, so it may not be the same in other parts of Italy or here in the US or you may disagree. That's it :)

Affectivity. This is definitely the main difference in my opinion and I something I really miss from my country. Here people are colder and less affectionate. When you meet your friends that are the opposite sex of yourself in Italy you always hug them and kiss them on the cheek and there isn't anything wrong with that, it's a way to show that you care about them. When you see somebody you know you always say hi and ask how's he/she doing and wait for the answer, not just a 'sap' super quick that teens say here. In Italy we don't greet people we don't know, here they do and it's nice. 

Education. I've actually already talked about the school here in one of my first post of August, I just wanna say a couple of things. In Italy we don't choose classes but we choose the kind of high school,which also depends if you wanna go to college or not. And here is the big point: college in Italy and in a lot of other countries in Europe is free, here in the US is really expensive and that's the reason why lot of students don't go: because they can't afford it. In Italy we pay more taxes but it's less compared to the college cost here and it allow everybody to be able to be educated so this is something I don't like about the United States. 

Food. Here in the US people eat lot of ready meal, fast food, which is often unhealthy and fat. The reason? Time and money, it's quickly and it's really cheap. My host family is hispanic so their tradition is different and they cook almost always, which is close to my culture, we Italians cook every single day, but we don't eat only pasta and pizza as foreigners think. There are really thousands of different fast food I had never heard about, and a lot of them do delivery, so you can just order and they bring it to your house. Anyway it's not true that all the american are fat, for sure not the teens, since they do lot of sports at school. They also have food from everywhere, lot of Italian stuff that aren't actually Italian, like pizza that is not that good hahaha, or Italian dressing which is the weirdest thing ever in my opinion. In Italy the lunch is important and we often eat it all together in family, here it's not, they just eat whenever. Something that here it's really common and it's related also to food is the Drive Through, which in Italy we call Drive-In actually and we have it I guess just for Mc Donald. Here there is for everything, from ATM, to Pharmacy, to Liquor store, to fast food places. 

Driving. All the cars are pretty big and loud and have automatic shift, I guess that manual one does exist but it's not common at all. At the crossways they can always turn right even with the red light, they just have to give yield, they're also allowed to pass on right in the highways. The behaviour of drivers is pretty much polite and respectful, which in Italy definitely isn't, most of all about people walking. In Italy we have lot of roundabout, which here is not common at all. In a lot of states you can't drive the motorbike withiut a gel et, bust lots of people just do it re gardonese. You can also get your licence at 16 after driving with an adult for one year from when you're 15.

Metric System. The units are different in the United States, they have inch (2.54 cm), foot (12 inches), yard (.9 meter). Also for the weight they don't use grams and kilograms but pounds (lbs), for the fluids gallons (3.78 l) and ounces. Of course also the money they have dollars hahaha

Foreign Languages. Here being bilingual it's not that common. It is because there are lot of hispanic people and immigrants in general, but people born in the US usually don't study foreign languages, sometimes Spanish but that's it. Being bilingual is a minority for american native speaker, being trilingual is a rarity. In Italy english is mandatory from third grade and everybody can understand it and in middle school is mandatory a second foreign language (Spanish, German or French). 

This is all I can think about right now, if I find something else I'll write about it. So these are the most common differences between US and Italy in my opinion, you're free to comment if you want to share your opinion about something. That's it, hope it's helpful :)

Questo post è sulle differenze Italia-USA, ce ne sono davvero tante, io vi parlerò di quelle che ritengo più significative, che mi hanno sorpreso o che stanno influenzando la mia esperienza. In questa traduzione italiana farò più in riassunto in quanto non devo spiegare come sono le cose in Italia visto che gli unici a leggere questa parte in italiano sono italiani. Prima di cominciare una premessa: quello che dirò è basato sulla mia esperienza e su dove vivo potrebbe essere diverso in altri luoghi e potrete non essere d'accordo, questa è la mia opinione :)

Affettività. Questa è di sicuro la maggiore differenza secondo me ed è qualcosa che mi manca davvero. Le persone qui sono più fredde e meno affettuose, quando incontri delle amiche niente abbraccio o bacio sulla guancia, per carità. Qui si salutano con un veloce 'sap' che sarebbe una cosa tipo 'come va', e continuano a camminare senza aspettare nemmeno la risposta. Qualcosa di bello è che gli stranieri salutano e sono educati, è carino.

Istruzione. Ho già parlato dell scuola qui, se mi seguito dovreste saperlo, è uno dei primi post di agosto se vi va di rivedere. Volevo solo aggiungere che l'università negli Stati Uniti è molto costosa e per questo molti ragazzi non ci vanno in quanto non se la possono permettere, in Italia paghiamo più tasse ma è comunque meno rispetto alla spesa per l'università qui, e questo aspetto di questo paese non mi è mai piaciuto molto, tutti dovrebbe poter aver una educazione superiore. 

Cibo. Come saprete qui negli Stati Uniti le persone mangiano molti cibi pronti, fast food, che sono poco salutari e molto grassi. Perché? Tempo e Soldi, questo tipo di cibo è incredibilmente economico e veloce. La mia famiglia è ispanica quindi è diverso, loro cucinano molto come noi italiani. Ho scoperto centinaia di fast food che non avevo mai sentito, perchè noi non li abbiamo, molti consegnano addirittura a casa. Gli americani comunque non sono tutti grassi, soprattutto i ragazzi perchè fanno molto sport a scuola. Qui c'è anche cibo da ogni parte del mondo, ma è spesso solo una versione americana del vero cibo straniero, soprattutto il cibo italiano, la pizza è molto diversa e meno buona, ovviamente. Qui il pranzo non è importante, non mangiano mai tutti insieme, ognuno quando capita, a cena a volte. Una cosa legata al cibo è il Drive- in che qui si chiama Drive Through e c'è ovunque, farmacia, negozio di liquori, banca, ristoranti.

Auto & Leggi. Tutte le auto sono enormi e rumorose e hanno il cambio automatico, deduco esista il manuale ma è molto raro. Agli incroci si può girare a destra anche se il semaforo è rosso dando la precedenza; si può sorpassare a destra. Gli autisti sono rispettosi, soprattutto con i pedoni. Qui inoltre non ci sono rotonde, ne avrò vista forse una in tutta la città. In molti stati si può guidare la moto senza casco, è una legge federale quindi per esempio in Colorado si può, a NY no. Puoi prendere la patente a 16 anni dopo aver guidato per un anno con un adulto a fianco, cominciando a 15 anni. 

Sistema Metrico. Le unità sono differenti qui, hanno gli inch, che è 2,54 centimetri, i piedi e le yard per le lunghezze, le libbre per il peso, galloni e once per i liquidi. Come moneta ovviamente il dollaro americano.

Lingue Straniere. Essere bilingue non è normale come da noi, ci sono molti bilingue per la presenza di immigranti ispanici, ma le persone nate in america raramente parlano una seconda lingua, ed è assolutamente raro parlarne tre.

Soccer Season & Fall Break

Hi everybody, I know I haven't written for a while, it's actually because I had anything to talk about, but I'm working on a post with advise for exchange and stuff like that, considerations and comparisons. Today I'll quickly write about the fall break and the soccer season, which are both over.

 I'm not positive but I guess I told you that our school does two weeks of fall break since it starts earlier in August. Today has been the first day back to school after 15 days of vacation, I didn't do anything special actually, I had soccer practice or a game every afternoon. In the mornings I used to rest and doing homework, at night I've just hang out with my host and chill. It has actually been good, boring sometimes, but thanks to these today today I started school rested. The next is gonna be Thanksgiving in about a month. So finally it's fall and it's actually starting getting cold, I think it will snow soon. The other thing I wanna talk about is the soccer season which is also over. We didn't do that good, the record was 5 games won and 7 lost and then we got disqualified from the tournament because we didn't have enough players so the varsity ones played with us. I had fun by the way, and I scored 19 goals so I'm happy. I guess that's it, I know it's a lot, I'll write more next time. Last Friday I also started to go to the gym with my host family and I've just come back, we'll go every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Hopefully I'll write soon, for the meantime Happy Halloween to everybody :)

Ciao a tutti, so di non aver scritto per un po', in realtà il motivo è che non avevo nulla di cui parlare, ma sto lavorando a un post per studenti con considerazioni, consigli e confronti. Oggi parlerò velocemente delle vacanze d'autunno e della stagione di calcio, entrambi finiti settimana scorsa. Non sono sicurissimo ma credo di averi detto che la mia scuola da due settimane di pausa visto che comincia prima in agosto. Oggi era il primo giorno di nuovo a scuola dopo 15 giorni di vacanza, non ho fatto niente di particolare, ho avuto allenamento per calcio e partite tutti i pomeriggi. Le mattine ho semplicemente riposato e fatto i compiti, di sera siamo usciti e a volte stati a casa. è stato utile ama a volte noioso, ma almeno ho riposato e ho iniziato scuola fresco. La prossima vacanza sarà il Ringraziamento in circa un mese. Il clima qui comincia ad essere freddo, l'inverno si avvicina in fretta, nevicherà presto. L'altra cosa di cui voglio parlare è la stagione di calcio che è appena finita. Non abbiamo fatto benissimo, vinte 5 e perse 7 e siamo stati squalificati dal torneo per aver mischiato i giocatori di diverse squadre. Comunque mi sono divertito e ho fatto 20 goal in tutta la stagione. Venerdì abbiamo anche iniziato ad andare in palestra, e sono appena tornato in effetti, ora andiamo tutti i lunedì, mercoledì e venerdì. Spero di scrivere presto, nel frattempo Buon Halloween a tutti :)

Fall Concert -Music & High School

Hi guys! Finally it's fall break!!! Friday was the first day and I'll be on vacation till Monday 26, but I have soccer practise or game every day. I'm actually about to leave for a game. Anyway, today I wanna talk about the fall concert that we did last Thursday with the Sand Creek High School bands.

I'm pretty sure I told you I'm in the band, but not what I play. My instrument is the baritone and I've played it since the sixth grade. At Sand Creek there are several bands, the main one is the one I play in which is Wind Ensemble; then there is the Symphonic Band, the Jazz band and the Orchestra. All these are classes that you can take. There is also the Marching Band that is an activity in the afternoon, after school, and they play during football games and at contests and competition. Actually they're about to leave in a few days for a completion which will take place in New Mexico. Good Luck guys!!! By the way the concert was really good, I enjoyed it, most of all for the people I play with. Something that really surprise me here about music it's that the words for the speed and stuff are in Italian, like allegro, forte, piano, lento. That's interesting! If you are going on exchange I recommend you to play an instrument because it can really help you integrating, making friends and most of all having fun ;)

Ciao, finalmente sono a casa per le vacanze d'autunno! Venerdì era l'ultimo giorno e sarò in vacanza fino a lunedì 26, ma ho allenamento per calcio o una partita tutti i giorni; ne ho una in un paio d'ore in realtà. Comunque, oggi vi voglio parlare del concerto d'autunno che abbiamo fatto giovedì con le bande della scuola. Sono abbastanza sicuro di avervi detto che sono nella banda della scuola, ma forse non che strumento suono: è il flicorno baritono, e lo suono della prima media. In Sand Creek ci sono molte bande: io suono in Wind Ensemble che è la più importante, c'è poi la banda sinfonica, l'orchestra e la banda jazz. Queste sono tutte materie che si può scegliere di seguire durante l'orario, c'è anche la banda in cui si fa marcia, che è però un'attività pomeridiana, si fanno gare, si suona ai giochi di football e si fanno competizioni. Ne hanno uno in New Mexico durante le vacanze, quindi buona fortuna ragazzi!!! Comunque il concerto è andato bene, mi sono divertito, soprattutto per le persone con cui suono. Qualcosa davvero interessante riguardo la musica qui è che le parole sugli spartiti sono in italiano, come allegro, forte, piano, lento. Se state pensando di diventare exchange vi consiglio di suonare uno strumento in una delle bande perchè aiuta a integrarsi, farsi amici e soprattutto divertirsi;)

Exchange Student - 10 Reasons Why You Should Be One

Today I'm gonna do something different that hopefully I'll be able to do several times about different things. I'm planning on writing advisory posts to help most of all future exchange students and also to have everybody understood what's this like. The one I'm about to start is about the reasons why it's worth to be an exchange student, it's gonna be a little bit long probably. Hope it's useful :)

10. Have Fun

Of course this not the main reason, but yes, be an exchange student is fun, you can do things you've never done and you'll never be able to do again. We're young, this is the time to have fun and enjoy these last years before the real life that is out there.

9. Realize A Dream

Be an exchange student may not be your dream, fair enough, but it has always been mine and since this is my blog it becomes a reason hahaha. Come on, be honest with yourself, who doesn't want to be in an high school, to play football, to choose classes, to go to school on a yellow bus, to were cap and  gown and to do the graduation? I'm talking about United States of course because that's what my dream was and that's where I am, but in other countries there are other traditions and things you cannot do in your. 

8. Live With An Host Family

This is a really important part when you are on exchange. You live with other people, unknown at the beginning, but then they become a second family for you. You learn how they live but most of all you learn to get used to new habits and a different life. 

7. Learn Or Improve Other Languages

The language is definitely a good point. Your second language becomes as good as your first, you speak it every single day and you learn to think in that language. Depending on where you are going you may improve it or also learning a new one. You'll never be able in your life to learn a language as quickly and good as you can do during an exchange, because in this period of life the brain learn everything much better.

6. Know A Different Culture

Do you thing to know everything or a lot about another culture? You can't be more wrong. I though I knew a lot about United States Traditions and habits but every day I learn something new. Spending a semester or an year abroad you understand the way people think, how they live, everything.

5. Live A Life In Your Life

I guess you all have heard about the classic quote 'Exchange is not an year in your life, it's a life in an year', well, it's true. When are you going to have the chance to start a second life for a certain period? You can't disagree that this is an unique experience... Think about it!

4. Learn Not To Take Everything For Granted And To Solve Problems

When you are home you have pretty much everything ready, you're mum probably washes your clothes, prepares the food, cleans the house and helps you and you probably don't even realise that because it's normal. Well, on exchange you have to do all that and you are alone, you have to solve your problems, to deal with what you have to. You'll end up having big problem solving skills and being aware of what's around you.

3. Undestand What's Homesickness & How Much Your Parents Love You

Everybody is homesick, everybody. You'll be far from your family, from your friends, but you'll learn to deal with it and to become adult. Something really important that the exchange year can help you to understand is the importance of your parents, how much you love them and they love you. This is what I have understood in just a couple of weeks. It's not gonna be easy for them to let you go, but they'll do it because they love you and they want the best for you, because experiences like this are the best and they'll change your life.

2. Find Yourself

'Go where nobody know your name and you will know yourself'. To live something like this can really help you to understand who you wanna be in you future, what kind of person you wanna become. It helps you understanding what's important in life, how time goes fast and what you should fight for.

1. Grow Up

Here we go, the final and in my opinion most important reason: Grow Up. You are a kid actually and you are thrown in a world where you're supposed to act like a men, to be adult. I'm telling you the truth, it's gonna be hard sometimes... Do you think the life to be easy? it's not, and this helps you learning how to deal with it. Exchange students after coming back tell that they feel uncomfortable in the life they left an year earlier because they became somebody else, they're not kids anymore.         This experience makes you a men!

Oggi farò qualcosa di diverso che spero di essere in grado di rifare: voglio scrivere post che possano aiutare futuri exchange e anche chiunque a capire quanto un'esperienza come questa sia importante. In particolare questo post è riguardo alle ragioni per cui vale la pena essere uno studente straniero per un periodo all'estero. Spero che sia utile :) 

10. Divertirsi

Ovviamente non è la ragione principale ma sì, essere un exchange è divertente, puoi fare cose che non hai fatto. Siamo giovani, questo è il momento di divertirsi, gli ultimi anni prima della vita vera che ci aspetta là fuori.

9. Realizzare Un Sogno    

Forse essere un exchange non è il vostro sogno, ma è sempre stato il mio e visto che questo è il mio blog questa diventa una ragione hahaha. su, chi non ha mai sognato di essere in una high school, di giocare a football, di scegliere le proprie materie, di andare su uno di quei pulmini gialli, di indossare il cappello e graduarsi? Io sto parlando di cose legate agli Stati Uniti perchè questo era il mio sogno ed è dove sono, ma allo stesso modo in altri paesi ci sono altre tradizioni e cose che non potete fare nel vostro paese. 

8. Vivere Con Una Famiglia Ospitante

Questa è una parte molto importante di questo programma. Si vive con persone sconosciute che diventano una seconda famiglia e da cui si imparano tradizioni, modi di vivere e si apprende ad abituarcisi.

7. Imparare O Migliorare Altre Lingue

La lingua è di sicuro un buon punto, parlare la tua seconda lingua bene come la prima, la parlerai tutti i giorni e penserei in quella lingua. A seconda di dove andrai ne migliorerai una che già sai o ne imparerai una nuova. Nella vita non sarai mai più capace di imparare una lingua bene e velocemente come ora perchè ora il tuo cervello apprende molto meglio.

6.Conoscere Una Nuova Cultura

Pensi di sapere tutto riguardo un'altra cultura? Probabilmente ti sbagli, io lo pensavo e ogni giorno sono più sorpreso e imparo qualcosa di nuovo. Passando un semestre o un anno all'estero impari come le persone pensano in altri paesi, come vivono, tutto.

5. Vivere Una Vita Nella Tua Vita

Tutti conoscerete la citazione 'L'anno all'estero non è un anno della tua vita ma la tua vita in un anno', beh, è vero. Potete iniziare un'altra vita da zero, quando mai vi capiterà di nuovo? Non potete negare che questa esperienza sia unica... pensateci!

4. Imparare A Non Dare Niente Per Scontato

Quando sei a casa hai tutto pronto, tua mamma probabilmente cucina, ti fa il bucato, fa le pulizie e ti aiuta se hai bisogno. All'estero sei solo, devi imparare a cavartela. Alla fine avrai grandi capacità di risolvere i tuoi problemi e sarai più cosciente del mondo che ti circonda.

3. Conoscere La Nostalgia e Capire Quanto I Tuoi Genitori Ti Vogliono Bene 

Tutti sono nostalgici, tutti. Sarai lontano da famiglia, amici, ma imparerai a conviverci e crescere. Un periodo all'estero ti fa capire quanto bene vuoi ai tuoi genitori e quanto loro te ne vogliono. Questa è una delle cose più importanti che ho capito. Per loro è difficile lasciarti andare, ma lo faranno perché ti vogliono bene e vogliono il meglio per te, perchè esperienze come questa sono il meglio e ti cambieranno la vita.

2. Trovare Voi Stessi

'Vai dove nessuno conosce il tuo nome e conoscerai te stesso'. Vivere questa esperienza ti aiuterà a capire cosa vuoi fare nella vita, che tipo di persona vuoi diventare. Ti aiuta a capire cos'è davvero importante, quanto il tempo passi in fretta e per cosa lottare.

1. Crescere

Eccoci qui, l'ultimo e secondo me principale ragione, la numero 1: crescere. Sei praticamente un bambino e ti trovi in un mondo dove devi comportarti come un uomo, essere adulto. Vi dico la verità, non sarà facile... Pensate che la vita lo sia? Beh, non lo è, e tutto questo vi aiuterà a imparare come affrontarla. Studenti che studiano all'estero e tornando dicono di sentirsi strani nelle loro vecchie vite perchè sono cresciuti, sono diversi, non sono più bambini.

Questa esperienza fa di te un uomo!

Spirit Week & Homecoming!

Hi everybody, I have so many things to talk about! This week has been the spirit week, with the homecoming football game on Friday and the homecoming dance last night… I had so much fun! 

The Spirit Week consists in the five days before the Homecoming and in each of these days there is a dress theme to follow. In my high school Monday was the Colorado Day, so everybody had to wear Colorado gear; Tuesday was the nerdy day. Wednesday was the class color day, which means that every grade had to wear clothes according to the color of their year. Freshman orange, Sophomore yellow, Junior purple and Senior green!!! Tuesday the theme was decades, like ’50s, ’60s, ‘70s and Friday was spirit day, so scorpion and Sand Creek gear because the symbol of our school is the Scorpion. 

On Friday night there was the Homecoming Football Game, it was also my first football game with the band, I went there to play with the marching band during the game, I play the baritone by the way. It was super cold, but fun. We played against Palmer High School and unfortunately we lost. Something really funny was also Powder Puff Football Game, where senior girls played against freshman girls and also Peach Fuzz Volleyball Game, where senior boys played against freshman. The most important part that also close the homecoming week is the Homecoming Dance, it was last night and it’s a dance party for all the students. It’s the first of the two dances, the other is the Prom, which is just for Junior and Senior and it’s at the end of the year. The homecoming one is more informal. I had really good time, even if the music wasn’t really good hahaha. I didn't go with a date, we just went a couple of friends all together, we went to eat to Red Robin and the to the Dance. This has been a real american week, so much fun. Thanks to those who took part of it :)

Ciao a tutti, ho parecchie cose da raccontare! Questa settimana è stata la Spirit Week con la partita di football dell’homecoming e il ballo ieri sera… Mi sono davvero divertito!

La Spirit Week è una settimana in cui ogni giorno c’è un tema secondo cui vestirsi. Nella mia scuola lunedì era il giorno del Colorado, martedì il giorno dei nerd, mercoledì il giorno dei colori delle classi, freshman arancione, sophomore giallo, junior viola e senior verde. Giovedì era il giorno dei decenni, per esempio anni ’50, ’60 e via dicendo. Venerdì era lo spirit day, quindi si dovevano indossare abiti della scuola. 

Venerdì sera c’è stato L’homecoming football game che era anche la mia prima partita di football con la banda, infatti abbiamo suonato durante la partita. Faceva veramente freddo, ma è stato altrettanto divertente. Abbiamo giocato contro la Palmer e purtroppo abbiamo perso. Altre cose veramente divertente di questa settimana sono state il Powder Puff, cioè le ragazze all’ultimo anno giocano a football contro quelle del primo anno, e il Peach Fuzz, cioè ragazzi dell’ultimo anno che giocano a pallavolo contro quelli del primo anno. 

La parte più importante che chiude l’homecoming week è il ballo. è stato ieri sera ed è un ballo per tutti gli studenti. L’altro famoso ballo è il Prom, che è a fine anno ed è solo per junior e senior. Questo è meno formale, mentre è il Prom è molto formale. 

Mi sono davvero divertito anche se in realtà la musica non era delle migliori hahaha

Foreign Students' Luncheon - Garden of the Gods Rotary Club

Hi guys! Since in the last post I told you I'd write about the luncheon for the foreign students in Colorado Springs area schools, here I am. Actually I don't have lot of things to say, I'll try not to forget anything.

The Rotary Club of Garden of the Gods invited all the foreign students in the city for a lunch al together, to meet each other and spend a while sharing our experiences. All the seven exchange students from my high school took part at this event, here is our picture all together. We are from several place in the world: (from left to right) China, Thailand, Italy (of course), South Korea, Germany, Kazakhstan and South Korea. It's been very helpful to have something sharing the same experience, feelings, fears. Anyway, let's go back to the lunch. We had a really great time, there were guys from everywhere. We also created a group and we're planning about hanging out together.  

When I decided to became an exchange student, to change my life, I had never thought that there are so many people in the world making the same choice. The estimated number only in the United States this year is around 900.000 students. This fact should have you all though how incredible and unique can be an experience like this.

Ciao! Visto che nell'ultimo post vi avevo detto che avrei scritto riguardo al pranzo per studenti stranieri nell'area scolastica di Colorado Springs, eccomi qui. In realtà non ho molte cose da dire, proverò a non dimenticare niente.  Il club rotary del Giardino degli Dei ha invitato tutti gli studenti stranieri della città per un pranzo tutti insieme, per conoscerci e condividere del tempo condividendo le nostre esperienze, Tutti i sette studenti stranieri della mia scuola, me compreso, hanno partecipato, sopra c'è una nostra foto. Veniamo da tutte le parti del mondo: Cina, Tailandia, Italia, Sud Corea, Germania, Kazakhstan e un'altra dal Sud Corea. È stato molto utile avere qualcuno che condividesse la stessa esperienza, gli stessi sentimenti e paure. Comunque, tornando al pranzo, ci siamo molto divertiti. Abbiamo anche creato un gruppo e stiamo programmando di uscire tutti insieme. Quando ho deciso di diventare uno studente straniero, di cambiare la mia vita, non avrei mai pensato che ci fossero così tanti ragazzi nel mondo che fanno questa scelta. Il numero stimato di studenti stranieri solo negli Stati Uniti quest'anno è circa di 900 mila. Questo fatto dovrebbe fare pensare a voi tutti quanto incredibile e una possa essere un'esperienza come questa.
